Ida Carey Maori Woman – Striped Shawl
Oil on board, 1960’s, height 70cm, width 54cm Born in 1891, Ida Carey painted throughout the 1920’s and 30’s developing a fresh and vivid style of portraiture. In 1937 she had her piece “Study” included in the Royal British Colonial Exhibition in London. In the early 1960’s after convalescing from a serious car accident she was inspired to find and paint every living Maori women with a Moko. Maori Woman – striped shawl is one of these special historic portraits.
