I travel around the country, regularly, on the look out for historic or dilapidated buildings. Or, the best, dilapidated AND historic buildings! They must hold that difficult to explain, something, that assists you to make an engaging and successful work of art. I almost always leave the environment that these buildings sit within, out of the picture, as I want the focus to be on the buildings themselves. I believe they tell the story of their surroundings, their past and future, well enough. I start by lightly marking out the building with a 2H pencil then, add a subtle watercolour wash to certain areas. After this has dried, I work back over the piece with a variety of pencils from HB to 8B. I frame the works myself to the highest quality, with UV glass and conservation grade mat board.
