Hundreds of layers of wax are applied to form the desired effects and texture (which is placed with a fine-tipped heated tool). Encaustic texture is an ancient art form dating back to ancient Greek times, followed later in Egypt. A relatively little-known fact is that Jasper Johns and Diego Rivera both painted with hot wax. This is a unique art form that few artists produce in NZ which will add a point of difference to any art collection. As an artist, Jo mainly produces commissioned pieces and sells at auction or by private viewing. The lyrics to the song Sweet Disposition popped into my head and this painting followed. It all ties in with the play of light on the water along with the deeper meaning of illumination.
