Absolute searching, absolute energy and absolute power. On par with the likes of Teahupo’o in Tahiti or Pe’ahi in Maui, Aileen’s, which sits just a little more than 3km from shore, can produce waves as tall as 12m that pitch forward into monstrous barrels weighing more than 400 tons at the falling lip – no mean feat even for the most experienced big wave surfer.

As an ocean lover, I wanted to convey all the beauty that is captured in a paua shell or abalone shell. Using wax and oil pastels, this painting is made up of many layers of blue, green, silver and purple medium with iridescence showing a different effect at every angle. This piece is also representative of our NZ culture, our oceans, the colours and the people made up of a multicultural ‘melting pot.’ Can be hung both horizontally and vertically.

The ‘Woven in Light’ series is inspired by my grandmother’s weaving. I grew up in Auckland and my granny lived on Frederick Street in Hillsborough – a street which runs along the cliff above Hillsborough Bay (funnily enough, the next bay around is called “grannys Bay”). My gran had a very large floor loom that she made blankets, throws, wall hangings, table mats and all sorts on – and as a little girl I thought it was all pretty magical! Her loom was based in a large shed in her garden – which was also a work of art with pathways that wound their way down towards the cliff. All of my extended family have items woven by Gran and they are very treasured pieces.
